How to position one-page websites?

Most often, entrepreneurs decide to position websites composed of many subpages. All because Google robots and users value complex websites. Does this mean, however, that positioning of one-page pages (such as: is impossible? Not at all. It just requires a proper strategy. Let’s check how to position one-page pages, what potential problems you may encounter and what elements of the page to take care of.

One-page – what is it and what can it be used for?

A one-page site is also known as a one-page site. All information contained therein is collected in one URL address – on the home page. The website does not contain any subpages in the menu, only possibly sections located in one URL address. One-page pages have a long, scrollable layout and (usually) a specific call-to-action geared towards the purpose of the website. One-page sites are most often used for the presentation of:

– portfolio (experience),
– virtual CV,
– one product or service,
 – one event,
– job offers,
– small business offers,
 – as an invitation to use the online store.

One-page a Landing Page

What is the difference between a one-page website and a landing page? A landing page, like a one-page site, presents a single product or service (like our automated paraphrasing tool) or event, and can have a long, sliding layout, but its address is one of many URLs on your site. If there are any links on the landing page, they will point to other URLs on the site. Links on a one-page page will lead to different sections of the page, but the URL will remain the same. Moreover, landing pages are primarily focused on conversions, while one-page pages can pursue different goals, e.g. presentation of an offer or experience.

Is one-page positioning difficult?

One-page positioning can be more difficult than optimization and SEO activities for multi-page websites. All because Google algorithms value complex pages, they contain rich content. What are the difficulties encountered by SEO specialists in the process of one-page website optimization?

– One-page pages have less content than multi-page pages, which means that ne-page keywords must be chosen carefully and focus on the most important phrases that have the potential to generate conversions.
– One-page pages may be less relevant than multi-page sites because there is a lot of different information on one page.
– The dynamic version of the one-page page (which downloads the content along with scrolling) may cause problems for Google crawlers during indexation.
– One-page pages have fewer possibilities in terms of building a link profile, because they can only obtain links to one subpage.
– One-page pages only contain one title and description.
– One-page sites may have less potential to generate conversions (the more landing pages, the better they can be optimized for the goal they are trying to achieve – there is only one page on a one-page site).

Advantages of one-page sites

While one-page search engine optimization requires creativity, one-page sites have many advantages:

– they allow you to quickly and easily create a website,
– improve the speed of the website,
– generate fewer technical problems,
– create space for creative design of the website,
 – make it easier to optimize the site for mobile devices,
– facilitate A / B testing,
– long scrolling makes it easier to tell the story of the product and attract the user’s attention.

How to optimize and position one-page pages?

One-page positioning is more difficult than for multi-page sites, but it is not impossible. You just need to develop an appropriate positioning strategy. We will discuss the elements of SEO strategies for one-page websites below.

1. Breakdown of a one-page page into sections
A one-page page, like any other, needs a friendly structure. To create it, divide the one-page page into sections. How to do it? In HTML code, mark sections with <div> tags. For each section, prepare:

– a separate set of keywords for which you want to position it,
– separate H1 headers,
– original content targeting the keywords and intent of the users who are looking for them.

You can create any number of sections on the one-page website – the only limitation may be the website design. Give the sections appropriate names – using the ID attribute to distinguish them and be able to link to them within the one-page page.

Optimizing the one-page page by adding sections will make it more readable for both Google robots and users.

2. Prepare H1 headings for each section
In the SEO of multi-page sites, there is only one H1 heading on one page. For single-page sites, H1 headers can and should be more. All because with H1 headers you will mark individual sections, not the whole page. Create one H1 heading for each section. This way, you let Google robots know that these sections are separate elements of a one-page page, and you will facilitate positioning. Each H1 heading should have catchy content containing the key phrases for which you rank a specific section.

3. Keyword analysis
Due to the limited amount of content, you will probably not be able to position yourself for all the keywords related to the offer. Therefore, in one-page positioning, the selection of keywords is even more important. Use the tools (Google Keyword Planner, Senuto, Semstorm, Ahrefs), create a list of key phrases, and then assess which of them generate the highest conversion chances and best describe your offer. You should conduct one-page SEO activities for these phrases. However, remember to assign them to individual sections.

4. Constant expansion and optimization of the content on the one-page site
Google robots appreciate “fresh”, that is, frequently updated content. If you want your one-page site to rank high in organic search results, you need to provide Google crawlers and users with the content they want. For this purpose, constantly expand and optimize the content available on your website. For one-page website positioning, it will require creativity, but it will definitely pay off. The site will be more frequently visited and indexed by Google robots. How to update and extend the content on the one-page site?

– Leverage user-generated content – add new comments and user testimonials to your site and delete old ones.
– Add new user questions and answers to the FAQ section.
– Check regularly whether the keywords you rank for are still popular on Google. If not, you can prepare new content optimized for new keywords.
– Regularly check whether new keywords related to your offer have become popular in the Google search engine and create content optimized for them. You can use the Google Keyword Planner tool to search for keywords.
– Use storytelling and build a captivating story.

5. Improving navigation (menu, internal links)
In order to improve navigation on the one-page site, use internal links and menus. To make it easier for Google bots to navigate the site, you should use internal linking. In one-page positioning it is difficult, but not impossible. To create a friendly link structure on a one-page site, reuse sections. Create an individual link for each of them. put it both in the menu and in the body of other sections. In this way, you will build a link structure that will facilitate navigation on the website for users and Google robots. After clicking on the link, the user will be taken to a specific section on the one-page site. In the HTML code, you will tag internal links with IDs. Optimize each ID for SEO and usability. How do I create section links on a one-page site to facilitate SEO?

– Create an individual ID for each section.
– Name the identifier,
– In the HTML code, a link to a specific section from another section or from a menu.

What can you do to improve your one-page navigation?
– use two types of menu: standard header menu and vertical menu, which is visible while scrolling the page (sticky menu) and highlights the currently viewed section;
– use descriptive menu names so users quickly find the information they need;
– use pop-ups that the user can open himself to view additional information and close at any time. This way of presentation ensures compactness and reduces scrolling.

6. Using parallax scrolling
Parallax scrolling is a visual effect on a webpage (or in-game, animation, etc.) that causes the foreground and background elements to move at different speeds. In this way, the illusion of depth (3D effect) and an element of movement are created on the page. Parallax scrolling is one of the effective techniques for web design and increasing user engagement on one-page sites.

7. Add an explicit CTA
If your one-page site has a purpose, add a call to action (CTA) to it. Make sure your Call to Action content is concise and appealing to users. CTAs may look like this:

– Download a PDF file,
– Register,
 – Go to our store.

You can add a CTA in several sections – research shows that doing so can increase your conversion rate by 20%.

8. Placing contact details on the website
A one-page website should build your authority and trust. To do this, put in it:

– your contact details,
– contact form,
 – links to social media channels.

9. Image optimization
Authentic images on a website can improve conversion rate and increase visibility in Google image results. However, to achieve these effects, original photos (not from image banks) should be added in individual sections of the one-page and optimized. To do this, complete the alternative description of the image. Add key phrases and information relevant to the user in it. In this way, you will make it easier for Google robots to read the content of the image or graphics.

10. One-page speed optimization
One of the strengths of a one-page site is the ability to quickly browse the site and find the information you need without having to download and load new content. To improve your user experience while browsing your website, it’s a good idea to perform a one-page optimization for loading time. For this purpose:

– limit javaScript HTML code length,
– use a minimum number of interactive elements,
– compress images.

To check how to improve the page loading time, use the GTmetrix or PageSpeed Insights tools. Each of them, after entering the page address, will indicate what you can do to optimize the speed of the one-page site and at the same time influence the user behavior on the site and positioning effects.

11. One-page website optimization for mobile devices
One-page websites must work properly on both desktop and mobile devices. To do this, create a responsive website that adjusts its appearance to the screen size of the device on which it is displayed. Thanks to a responsive website, the user:

– reads content on mobile,
– easy to use the one-page menu,
– will have access to all buttons.

To check how the website is displayed on mobile devices, use the mobile Friendly Test tool.

12. Adding references
One-page sites do not always inspire trust of users. You can change this by creating a special section with customer references. Place in it the most interesting opinions of users who appreciate your services. This may encourage others to take advantage of the offer. The references section is also a way to update your one-page content on a regular basis. Every few months, you can replace old opinions with new ones.

13. Adding a FAQ section
Your goal in one-page positioning and optimization is to put as much information as possible on one page without overwhelming the user. To expand the content on a one-page website, it is worth using the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) section and answering the most frequently asked questions of users about a product, service or event. This way, you can also optimize your one-page site for long tail phrases.

Positioning and optimization of one-page pages is not impossible. However, require experience and, above all, creativity. There is no point in creating a multi-page site just for the sake of SEO. It is better to design a one-page website and take care of its quality, up-to-date content as well as effectiveness and adaptation to the needs of users. For the promotion of one-page sites that present a product, service or event, not only positioning, but also Google Ads advertising will work.
